A vermillion lacquer arrow in Kamigamo Shrine➶

　One of the most enjoyable hobbies is traveling to Kyoto by myself. I visit Kyotoa few times a year,almost always in spring and summer. There are two reasons I visit Kyoto.

The first purpose is to see a friend who lives in Kyoto. I acquainted with her at goods shop I happened to enter when It was my first time visiting. She is a clerk at the shop.I had dropped in the shop to talk with her. It was often that two hours went by without my noticing since it was a cozy little goods shop. We had kept in touch with letters since then.When I visit Kyoto, Italk over a cup of tea with my friend. I' m looking forward to talking about an artist that she connects with for her work as the clerk. She tells me the latest artist's exhibition.

　Secondly, It makes me feel relaxed to go to shrines and temples.

I hope that you pay a visit to Kamigamo shrine, which is designated as a World Heritage Site.

It is covered with trees in the precincts.During the fresh green of spring, there are lot of those who do cycling while their hair blows in the wind. Some others are drawing or taking a break here.I payed a visit to there on the day the handmade market was held on the fourth Sunday.

There are various shops such as bagel shops, accessories shops and leather shops and so on and so forth.I was so excited, but I couldn't make up my mind to which places to choose. I eventually went to some bagel shops and picked uplots of bagels. (I'm partial to bagels)

I was impressed with the mythological "Tatesuna" which were in front of " Hosodono". They described "Kamiyama" as the symbol, the lead god" Kamowakeikaduchi no Okami"who first descended. Actually it seems that the lead god descended 2km north of the main shrine. Today," Morijio"which is heaped up salt in the entrance used to pray for servers who works at restaurants and public entertainment places, dates back to "Tatesuna". I heard that the volunteer guide talked about the origin of Kamigamo shrine including the lead god " Kamowakeikaduchi no Okami". I learned about" Tamayorihime no Mikoto" and " Kamotaketunumi no Mikoto" 's child," Kamowakeikaduchi no Okami"." Tamayorihime no Mikoto"is the mother and"Kamotaketunumi no Mikoto"is the father. Shimogamo shrine was dedicated to"Kamotaketunumi no Mikoto" and" Tamayorihime no Mikoto".The lead mother became pregnant after putting a vermillion lacquer arrow in floor which had flowed from the upper part of the Kamo River.

　There is a famous food"Yakimochi"in Kamigamo shrine.The traditional shops are in the precincts and near Kamigamo shrine.I have eaten it at Jinbado shop near Kamigamo shrine.It is pieces of rice cake containing low-sweet beans paste.I hope you love it.It isn't the word "Yakimochi" which means jealousy."Yakimochi"were associated with the mythology" Kamowakeikaduchi no Okami" was born." Ya" means " arrow" , "Ki" means "come from"and "Mochi" means " rice cake".

　Lately a priest, Mitsutake Inui,at Kamigamo shrine is trying to launch a seminar for foreign tourists to become familiar with the religion. He explains in English the history of the shrine and rituals. They can participate in a sleepover to experience Shinto activities which involve sweeping the precincts, carrying a portable shrine and copying religious writings. I have experienced copying Buddhist drawing "Nyoirin Kannon Bosatsu" at the Zuishinin temple, but I haven't experienced copyingreligious writings. I hope I will experience it once!

 

 

　わたしが一番楽しいと思える趣味のひとつがひとり京都旅行です。一年に数回、特に大体、夏と春に訪れます。京都に訪れる理由が２つあります。

最初の目的は京都に住む友人に会いにいくことです。私は初めての京都旅行でたまたま、入った雑貨屋で彼女と知り合いになりました。彼女はお店の人でした。私は彼女と話すためにお店に立ち寄っていました。店内が心地よかったので、私は2時間が過ぎていることを気づかず話していることがよくありました。私たちは出会って以来、手紙でやりとりをしていました。私は京都へ訪れる度、友人とお茶をしながらお話しをします。彼女が店員として仕事で携わっているアーティストについて話すことを私は心待ちにしています。彼女は最新のアーティストの展覧会の情報を与えてくれます。

　二つ目は、神社とお寺にいくことが私をリラックスさせてくれるからです。私は、世界遺産に登録されている上賀茂神社に参拝することをおすすめします。境内は木々で覆われています。新緑の時は、風が髪をなびかせながら、サイクリングをする人々がいます。絵をかいたり、ひと休みをしている人もいます。

私は、毎月第4日曜日に開かれる上賀茂神社の手作り市の時に訪れました。ベーグルショップ、アクセサリーショップと革製品ショップなどなどたくさんのお店が出店していました。私はとても、わくわくしたけど、どちらのお店に行こうか決められませんでした。結局、いろんなベーグルのショップに行き、たくさんのベーグルを買いました。（私はベーグルが大好物です！）

私は細殿の前に位置する“立砂”の神話に強く印象に残っていました。“立砂”は祭神“賀茂別雷大神”が最初に降りた“神山”を表しています。実のところ“賀茂別雷大神”は本殿の北2Kmに降りてきたようです。今日、飲食店や寄席で商売をする人が縁起を祝って入口の前に盛る塩“盛塩”は“立砂”に由来します。私はボランティアガイドさんが祭神“賀茂別雷大神”を含む上賀茂神社の起源についての話を聴きました。私は“玉依姫命”と“賀茂建角身命”の子どもが“賀茂別雷大神”であることを知りました。“玉依姫命”は母で“賀茂建角身命”は父です。下鴨神社は“玉依姫命”と“賀茂建角身命”を祭っています。下鴨神社の祭神“玉依姫命”は賀茂川上流から流れてきた丹塗りの矢を床に置いたところおなかに子ども“賀茂別雷大神”を宿ったのです。

　上賀茂神社では名物“やきもち”があります。境内と神社の付近の2ヵ所に老舗のお店があります。私は上賀茂神社の近くの神馬堂でいただきました。餅の中に甘さ控えめの餡が中に入っているのが“やきもち”です。私は“やきもち”が気に入ると思います。“やきもち”は嫉妬という意味ではないです。“やきもち”は“賀茂別雷大神”が誕生した神話と関係しています。“や”は“矢”で“き”は“来る”で“もち”は“餅”を意味しています。

　最近、上賀茂神社の僧イヌイミツタケさんが外国の旅行客層向けに、宗教に親しみを持つためのセミナーを始めています。彼は、神社と儀式の歴史を英語で説明をしています。外国の旅行客は境内を掃いたり、お神輿を担いだり、写経をしたりと神道の活動を経験するために宿泊に参加できるのです。私は写経の経験はないけれど、随心院で“如意輪観音菩薩”を写仏した経験があります。一度、写経をしてみたいです。
